Meditation can more descriptively be called relaxation, or conscious
relaxation. Most of us have dabbled in meditation by participating in conscious relaxation - perhaps before a sports competition, a flight, or to manage pain at the dentist. We start by paying attention to our breath.
This practical effort of focusing on our breath takes our attention away from the "chatter" in our mind. With repeated effort the goal of clearing your mind, to think of nothing or to focus on a particular sensation, does occur. The result is an increased sense of peace, calm and focus, and eventually opening yourself to new insights.
